World No.1 Rafael Nadal will make his Japanese debut spearheading the $US1.23 million ($A1.27 million) Japan Open tennis tournament which gets under way on Monday.
The 24-year-old Spaniard captured his sixth title of the year and 42nd overall at the US Open last month to complete the career Grand Slam by also winning Wimbledon, Roland Garros and the 2009 Australian Open.
His successful season has earned him the year-end number one ranking and a place at the ATP World Tour Finals to be played in London from November 21.
Nadal made his Thailand debut last week in Bangkok, but he crashed to a surprise defeat to compatriot Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the semi-finals on Saturday after missing 24 out of 26 break points.
"This is a tough loss to take," said Nadal. "I had a chance to reach another final and maybe win another title. But it was not to be. That is the sport and this was not my day."
Nadal, top seed in Tokyo, will have a chance to get revenge if unseeded Garcia-Lopez can survive the tough second quarter, which includes fourth seed Jurgen Melzer of Austria and sixth seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain.
Lopez was drawn to play against last year's US Open champion, Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentine, in the first round. Del Potro came to Tokyo last year as a hot favourite and crashed to a qualifier in the first round.
Nadal will play Santiago Giraldo of Colombia in the first round, and either Florent Serra of France or a qualifier in the second.
His quarter includes seventh seed Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, who captured his first career title at Delray Beach in February, and unseeded Richard Gasquet of France, the winner at Nice in May.
The 2003 US Open champion Andy Roddick will lead the bottom half of the draw with defending champion and third seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, his compatriots Gael Monfils, fifth seed, and Michael Llodra, eighth seed.
Roddick, the winner at Miami and Brisbane this season, will start his campaign against Japanese wild card entrant, Tatsuma Ito, in the first round, while Tsonga will play Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, the Thailand Open finalist.
