"[Rafael] Nadal. Man, he's so fidgety. He's gotta have everything just so … I mean, the label on the water bottle has to face a certain way, and his towel has to be folded a certain way and his rackets have to be sitting a certain way. And if anything happens to his stuff, he keeps fiddling until it's right. And then as soon as they tell him the break's over, he'd -- bam! -- sprint back out on the court."

“Without health it is impossible to have a chance to win,” Nadal said on the court after the match.
“Seriously, seriously, I don’t know,” Nadal said. “I think it is a matter of confidence.”

Nadal's next opponent is another Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco. Just as Nadal was taking the court Verdasco was putting the finishing touches on a five-set thriller against David Ferrer that spurred memories of his 2009 Australian Open semifinal against Nadal, a match Nadal won after five sets and four hours.

"He's a very complete player," Nadal said of Verdasco. "He has all the shots and he's playing very well, no? Much better than he did last months, so gonna be very difficult match. I saw him play today, and I saw him play against Nalbandian the other day. He's playing very good tennis, so gonna be a very interesting match. I have to play aggressive, to play well."

Nadal’s chances of winning his first United States Open are better than ever this year for another reason: he has adjusted his playing style to the surface, hitting faster serves that sometimes exceed 130 miles per hour (in past years he usually spun them in at under 110 m.p.h), standing closer to the baseline to take time away from his opponents, and trying to take control of points earlier in rallies with flatter strokes.

Nadal was born on this gorgeous Mediterranean island, where the worst ravages of tourism have been contained to one or two areas, and where poets, scholars and party animals have, somehow, thrived shoulder to shoulder over the past century. The football team is a royal franchise, originally named after the then-reigning King Alfonso when it was founded in the early 20th century and currently the owner of the grand title Royal Sports Club Mallorca.

The Wimbledon champion was forced to work hard at the start of the second set, which followed serve for four games until Lopez capitulated with a weak third service game. That offered Nadal a chance to seal the set provided he could defend his own serve and, with Lopez looking functional rather than inspired, he did so, serving to love to clinch a 2-0 advantage.
