Impressive Nadal Reaches Fourth Round
Defending champion Rafael Nadal kept alive his bid to become just the second man in history to win six Roland Garros titles on Saturday when he defeated qualifier Antonio Veic 6-1, 6-3, 6-0.
Nadal allowed World No. 227 Veic only seven points in the first set and despite struggling on serve, conceding a couple of breaks, in the second set he regained control by hitting a number of groundstroke winners.
The World No. 1 committed just 18 unforced errors and converted nine of his 10 break point opportunities for victory in one hour and 41 minutes. Veic, who had never before met a Top 10-ranked player, committed 29 unforced errors.
He will next play either Spanish compatriot and No. 16 seed Fernando Verdasco or Ivan Ljubicic, a former World No. 3 from Croatia, in the fourth round.
Nadal is hoping to Bjorn Borg's record of six Roland Garros titles between 1974-1981. Nadal has a 41-1 record in Parisian clay and a 39-6 match record on the season.
Veic was bidding to become the lowest ranked player to defeat the World No. 1 at a Grand Slam championship since No. 193-ranked Andrei Olhovskiy beat Jim Courier in the third round of 1992 Wimbledon.
