NADAL LEADS SPANISH CHARGE IN NEW YORK
Rafael Nadal wins his 16th straight Grand Slam match on Friday.
After cruising through the opening set in 34 minutes with two breaks of serves, Nadal clawed his way from down 1-5 in the second set tie-break to maintain the lead. Nadal came under pressure again in the third set, needing to fight off five break point chances, and then seized his first opportunity to break Istomin’s serve – also his first match point – clinching the victory as his opponent netted a return.
Istomin gives his all, but falls to Nadal in straights
“I’m working on my serve all my life. Sometimes, (it) works well. Other times, not working that well,” said Nadal, who has saved all eight break points he’s faced in the tournament. “A few days ago, I started to feel very well with my serve. First two matches, I’ve served very well. Didn’t lose a serve, and that does good for the confidence.”
Rafa still a work in progress at U.S. Open

Nadal figured out how to adjust for Wimbledon many years ago, moving up in the court, hitting out more often, moving his serve around more than he does on clay. But his U.S. Open evolution is still in progress. What we know about Nadal is that he's willing to tinker and change. In New York, what could be more appropriate than adding a little Jimbo to the mix?

The best tennis player in the world has a hole in his resume that seems far larger than his ego.
"I hope I have another chance to win [the U.S. Open]," says Rafael Nadal. "But without obsession, no?"
"I am more than happy with what I have at home, all the tournaments I won. It's more than I dreamed five or six years ago.
Nadal downs Istomin in straight sets
"That is pretty strange because I wasn't serving really very well, really until two days before the competition," Nadal said. "I changed a little bit the grip, about five or six inches up. I felt like when I didn't have free points and I needed that. So I tried to play a little bit more aggressive."
