Rafael Nadal out to win his sixth consecutive Monte-Carlo title
Rafael Nadal, in pursuit of his 6th title
The Spaniard Rafael Nadal, ranked no.3, who last year became the first ever player in the history of the tournament to win five consecutive years, illustrated his attachment to the tournament by confirming his participation in this year’s event.
Since the beginning of the tennis Open era in 1969, only three players had succeeded in winning three editions: Ilie Nastase (1971, 1972, and 1973), Bjorn Borg (1977, 1979, 1980) and Thomas Muster (1992, 1995, 1996). Rafael Nadal who has surpassed his predecessors, has even beaten the quadruple win of the New Zealander Anthony Wilding (winner in 1911, 1912, 1913 and 1914).
“Rafa was one of the first players to sign up for the tournament, with one objective in mind: to accomplish a hitherto unachieved feat, that of winning 6 consecutive titles in Monaco. We can be sure that he will put on a good show!” declared Zeljko Franulovic.
